Braves ace Julio Teheran has struggled all season and that did not change in a 7-0 loss to the Brewers. Teheran served up seven earned runs off seven hits and two walks in just three innings to fall to 6-6 with a 5.30 ERA on the season.
Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda allowed seven runs in just four innings while watching three home runs leave Yankee Stadium in a 7-6 loss to the Rangers. The loss drops Pineda to 7-4 with a 4.12 ERA on the season.
Of course, there are things that have gone right in New York other than Judge’s production. However, few expected him to be performing like one of the best hitters in baseball. He’s already smacked 22 home runs, and his .338 batting average has been a shock given his track record. While his Cheap Islanders Jerseys average is going to come down, Judge has clearly taken steps forward and given the Yankees a middle-of-the-order bat to build around.
And though his statistics weren’t great, Tebow definitely did show a modicum of baseball talent and potential. It’s still relevant to point out that this is a guy who turns 30 in August and hadn’t played baseball competitively since he was in high school, so when the Mets talk about things like improved contact rate and exit velocity, that’s not complete nonsense. Sure, the Mets would have loved it if that batting average was in the .275 range, and it would have been great if he’d popped nine or 10 home runs.
Why don’t those actual statistics matter? I keep going back to spring training. I was at a Marlins-Mets game in Port St. Lucie — in the same stadium he’ll call home now — near the end of a blowout game. Tebow was still on the big-league roster at this point (March 19), but he hadn’t appeared in the contest yet. The Marlins led 7-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
